(Use of Was/Were)

Is/am/are का जो कार्य present tense में है, वहीं कार्य was/ were का past tense में है. Was/ were का हिंदी में अर्थ ‘था, थी, थे’होता है.के निम्नलिखित उदाहरणों से इनका प्रयोग समझ में आ जाएगा :

Affirmative Sentences 

वह एक राजा था.	He was a king.
आरती एक लड़की थी.	Arti was a girl.
वह मेरा नौकर था.	He was my servant.
यह मेरा स्कूल था.	This was my school.
वे खिलाडी थे.	They were players.
वे मेरे मित्र थे.	They were my friends.
हम दुखी थे.	We were sad.
वो खुश थी.	She was happy.
उसके चाचा दुकानदार थे.	His uncle was a shopkeeper.
मैं सोया हुआ था.	I was asleep.
तुम वहाँ थे.	You were there.
उनका घर बड़ा था.	Their house was big.
रावण लंका में था.	Ravana was in Lanka.
गंगा घर में थी.	Ganga was in house.
उसकी पेंसिल छोटी थी.	Her pencil was small.
कुआँ सूखा था.	The well was dry.
अंगूर खट्टे थे.	The grapes were sour.
कमरा गन्दा था.	The room was dirty.
पानी ठण्डा था.	The water was cold.

Negative Sentences 

सुदामा धनी नहीं था.	Sudama wasn’t rich.
वह मेरा मित्र नहीं था.	He wasn’t my friend.
रमा गायिका नहीं थी.	Rama wasn’t a singer.
सैनिक थके नहीं थे.	Soldiers weren’t tired.
हम दुखी नहीं थे.	We weren’t sad.
वह मेरा सहपाठी नहीं था.	He wasn’t my class fellow.
वे चतुर नहीं थे.	They weren’t clever.
मैं सोया नहीं था.	I wasn’t asleep.
कुत्ता खेत में नहीं था.	The dog wasn’t in the field.
आम पके नहीं थे.	Mangoes weren’t  ripe.

Interrogative Sentences

क्या वह हिन्दू था?	Was he a Hindu?
क्या वे सुनार थे?	Were they goldsmith?
क्या मैं पागल था?	Was I a mad?
क्या वह दुल्हन थी?	Was she a bride?
क्या घोड़े अस्तबल में थे?	Were the horses in stable?
क्या वह तुम्हारी किताब थी?	Was that your book?
क्या वह मस्जिद थी?	Was it a mosque?
क्या गन्ना मीठा था?	Was the sugarcane sweet?
क्या हम भूखे थे?	Were we hungry?
क्या तुम वहाँ थे?	Were you there?
क्या चोर जेल में था?	Was the thief in the jail?

(Use of Was/Were)

Memorable Points :1. I, he, she, it, this, that तथा अन्यSingular subjects के साथ was का प्रयोग होता है.
2. We, you, they, these, those तथा अन्य plural pronouns के साथ were का प्रयोग होता है.
3. Negative sentences बनाने के लिए was/ were के बाद ‘not’ का प्रयोग होता है.
4. Interrogative Sentences बनाने के लिएwas/ were को वाक्य के प्रारंभ में लगाया जाता है.
